About us

St Peter's Hill Players was the first amateur dramatic society in Grantham. It all began in the 1920's with the members of the Church Tennis Club discussing ways to pass the long winter evenings. Subsequently The Rackets Concert Party was formed and they presented A New Sparkling Variety. Later in 1933 it became a fully fledged drama group The St Peter's Hill Amateur Dramatics Society which eventually was shortened to St Peter's Hill Players as it is still known today.

Up to the outbreak of the Second World War the group regularly performed their plays in the Congregational (now the United Reformed) Church Hall which until Spring 1991 was still the venue for present day productions. In those days there was no permanent stage, this was not built until 1949, so the enthusiastic thespians brought in trestle tables disguised with a front cloth. However, they did tend to sag in the middle and it was a bit of a giveaway when the leading man strode purposefully across the stage, going up and down as if he was walking on the high seas! After the war the Society re-formed and since that time has performed every year to the people of Grantham and surrounding district. In addition, during the 1970's the group presented three full scale comedy revues devised and written by members of the Society.

The conversion of Grantham's old Guildhall into an Arts Centre with its modern facilities and spacious stage brought St Peter's Hill Players into a new era. The Society has carried on using the church hall in Castlegate for rehearsing. Sadly this long relationship must come to an end as the church is having to sell the hall, so it is with heavy heart St Peter's Hill Players is looking for a new home. If you know of any space ideally with a stage please let us know!

If you would like to join us whether wanting to tread the boards or to help behind the scenes new members are always given a warm welcome as well as a cup of tea and a biscuit! Contact us and let us know you are coming so we can be on our best behaviour!!!
